Amherst, MA - The Common School begins its yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary with its largest Children's Carnival ever. This year’s carnival takes place on Saturday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the School’s campus at 521 South Pleasant Street in Amherst. The Children’s Carnival is open to the public, with no admission fee and will feature several free activities and treats, including a magic show by Flippo the Juggling Clown; a performance by a Senegalese dancer Abdou Sarr; music by the EZ Band, the School’s student rock band; and a giant 50th anniversary cake. Breakfast, hearty lunches, and treats such as cotton candy, homemade baked goods and smoothies will also be available for purchase. The Children’s Carnival is the first of a series of special events planned for the coming year to mark the 50th anniversary of The Common School and set the stage for the next 50 years of growth and achievement. The School, for children ages 3 to 12, was founded in 1967 by Emily Johnson, who invited the Amherst community to join her in “a challenging experiment in education” by creating a school that would foster curiosity, independence and a love of learning in children. In the event of rain, the Children’s Carnival will be held indoors at Amherst Regional Middle School at 170 Chestnut Street.
