Description
In person at the Yiddish Book Center | Sunday, March 22, 2026, 7 p.m. ET
One of the most unusual and artistic films in American indie history, The Man Without a World is credited to Soviet director Yevgeny Antinov . . . but that is far from the whole truth. Antinov is a persona created by contemporary filmmaker Eleanor Antin, a renowned artist, author, and performer. The film is a quirky, comic portrait of a Polish shtetl whose residents must survive both crushing poverty and their own internal political, cultural, and religious divisions.
An amazing cast and crew includes Pier Marton, Christine Berry, Anna Henriques, Marcia Goodman, Don Sommese, and more. Restoration funding was provided by the Sunrise Foundation for Education and the Arts, and a new score was composed and recorded by Alicia Svigals (violin) and Donald Sosin (piano). Sosin and Svigals will perform live with the film. Since 2018 they have been delighting audiences throughout the United States and Europe with their stirring violin and piano scores for Jewish-themed silent films. Silent Film, 98 minutes, English Intertitles, 1991 Sosin is one of the world’s top silent film musicians, and Svigals is the world’s leading klezmer violinist and a founder of the Grammy-winning Klezmatics.
