Written during the composer's long retirement from the opera world\, the piece was described by Rossini as "the last of my p ch s de vieillesse" (sins of old age). Originally scored for two pianos and harmonium\, small choir and four soloists\, Rossini later orchestrated the work to save it either from oblivion or from a second rate orchestration by another composer. The choirs welcome the Rossini Festival Orchestra and soloists in a performance of the rarely heard orchestral version.
