She wants to flee her own body\, but she is locked in her mother?s garden\, waiting for the moment when the newborn will arrive. She cannot imagine herself as a mother\, certainly not as the good mother she thinks she?s supposed to be. In a contemporary environment of fragmentation and isolation\, women are often alienated from this primal experience\; there is ambiguous archeological evidence (at which Livy scoffs) that birth was far more sacred and central in pre-history\, and Livy?s companions open a pathway to that earlier world.
