| Jun 5 Gallery A3 Opening Reception: Gesture and Line by Karen Iglehart |
GESTURE AND LINE / KAREN IGLEHART
Karen Iglehart has worked with gesture, movement, and line since the beginning of her painting career in 2000, as an integral part of her instinctual process. The recent abstract works on display at Gallery A3 during June express the qualities of gesture in brushwork and in palette knife application. All the paintings are oil on canvas, ranging from the small-scale 12 x 12 inches to the large-sized 30 x 40 inches.
“I am attempting to express a quality of movement…relating to thoughts, ideas, and perceptions of surroundings, without a subject or storyline,” the artist explains. Much of her inspiration comes from her practice of Buddhist meditation, experiencing the arising and dissolution of thoughts and the calm and activity that is constantly part of being human. She says, “I am also hoping to create a sense of space that might be a resting place for the viewer in the overly busy times we live in.”
Karen has lived in the valley since 1988. She had a studio at Cottage Street, Easthampton, for many years and now works from her studio at home. |

In this talk, PhD candidate in Comparative Literature Genny Dorgan will explain how medieval universities produced knowledge and discuss the rare case of a female writer, the thirteenth-century German mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg, who became an accepted source of authority on matters of theology. |

July 15 | Ruth Appiah Kubi Co-Creating Systems of Care That Support Pregnant and Postpartum Individuals What if every woman moved through pregnancy and birth feeling supported, safe, and cared for? What if positive experiences were the norm rather than the exception? Many women do—but not all. A missed visit, feeling lost while trying to find support, or feeling unheard during the perinatal period can snowball into serious complications and, in the worst cases, contribute to preventable maternal deaths. These stories, both uplifting and painful, are happening in our own communities, and they deserve to be heard. We invite you to join us in holding space for this range of experiences and imagining the care, support, community-rooted change, policy, and advocacy efforts needed to help every mother feel seen, safe, and cared for.
July 15 | Jeng-Yu Chou From Detection to Policy: AI and Human Systems for Safer Digital Spaces Is it possible to automate safety in a digital world where context is everything? What happens when technology evolves faster than our laws can keep up?
This talk highlights two facets of digital safety, including how machine learning is being used to efficiently identify harmful content at scale, as well as findings from characterizing real-world activity and user-generated content on social media platforms. Come discuss the intersection of technical innovation and real-world policy, and how evidence from research moves from the lab into decisions that shape safer online communities. |

| Jul 17 2026 23rd Annual Golf Tournament |
The Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to host its 23rd Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, July 17, 2026 at the picturesque Cold Spring Country Club in Belchertown, presented by Western Mass Heating, Cooling, & Plumbing!
The Golf Tournament is the Chamber's biggest fundraiser of the year, and an opportunity to come together and network with 100+ members of the business community. Enjoy on-course features, enter in exciting raffles and bid for items in our first annual online auction, all while enjoying outdoor recreation and some friendly competition on the green before wrapping up the day with dinner and networking.
A portion of the proceeds also benefits Friends of Lake Wallace, a group that maintains an accessible 1.25-mile loop sensory trail in Belchertown, MA.
New to Golf? You're Welcome Here.
You do not need to be an experienced golfer to be part of the Chamber’s Golf Tournament. This event is first and foremost a day of connection, community, and support for the Amherst Area Chamber’s work to strengthen local business and regional vitality. For those who are newer to golf, returning after time away, or simply unsure what to expect, we are creating a more welcoming pathway to participate.
New golfer-friendly options may include:
-
Newcomer Foursomes: Teams designed for newer or casual golfers who want to enjoy the day in a low-pressure, supportive setting.
-
Ambassador Support: A Chamber Ambassador or experienced golfer may be paired with newer teams to help explain the flow, etiquette, and format.
-
Simple “How It Works” Guidance: Participants will receive clear information in advance about the tournament format, what to bring, what to wear, and what to expect throughout the day.
Whether you are a longtime golfer, a first-time participant, a sponsor, or a business leader looking to build new relationships, this event is designed to be welcoming, fun, and accessible. Our goal is to make the Chamber’s largest fundraiser a stronger point of connection for the full Amherst Area business community.

| Jul 25 The Unreconciled Project presents a special performance of the award-winning play UNRECONCILED |
Galvanizing audiences nationally and internationally, UNRECONCILED is a solo tour de force of daring to stand up to an institution that wants nothing more than silence. Thirteen-year-old Jay Sefton dreamed of being an actor and was cast as Jesus in a school play directed by the parish priest — later defrocked and named in a grand jury report for sexual abuse of minors. Told with unflinching honesty and surprising humor, Sefton exposes the wider system that denies justice to survivors, taking audiences on a magic carpet ride through love and bewilderment in a whiskey-drenched, sports-crazed suburb of 1980s Philadelphia, where daily life is punctuated by church bells.
The show will be followed by a discussion on healing trauma through theatre with Bessel van der Kolk (bestselling author of The Body Keeps the Score and foremost expert on trauma) and Licia Sky, (co-founder of the Trauma Research Foundation). Hailed by critics and audiences, UNRECONCILED is the winner of the Berkshire Theatre Critics Association Award for Best New Play and Best Solo Performance, and Sefton has received numerous honors, including the Sean P. McIlmail Hero Award from CHILD USA. Mass Live called UNRECONCILED’s debut “The play to gain Chester Theatre and Sefton well-deserved national attention, whether it goes to Broadway, other regional theaters or to film. It’s just that good.” UNRECONCILED sparks powerful conversations among audiences, survivors, and advocates.
In conjunction with the July 25 performance at the Academy of Music and post-show discussion with Bessel van der Kolk and Licia Sky, the Unreconciled Project will offer a creative writing workshop and peer support group for survivors and their loved ones on July 26. A feature-length documentary film of the UNRECONCILED journey is in production. The July 25 event will be part of the documentary. |

July 29 | Kathleen Mahoney Playing is Naturally Scientific: A Case Study of Outdoor Play-Based Science Experiences in Early Childhood Education This case study examines how early childhood educators perceive and support outdoor play-based science experiences (PBS), and how those experiences are intentionally—or unintentionally—aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The study also explores how educators use a sociocultural approach to establish intentional and explicit connections between play principles, scientific inquiry, and concept development. |

This is how Miranda’s first-year writing students begin every class session, yet they never revise, turn in, or share that writing. Instead, they reflect on the experience of private freewriting. What is an internship?
An internship is a position within an organization that provides students with professional-level training and/or the opportunity to explore a specific career path. Internships can be offered year-round -- during the fall or spring semesters, over winter break, and throughout the summer. During the academic semester, students may intern either full-time of part-time while continuing to their coursework. Unlike a traditional part-time job, internships are career focused and built around defined learning objectives. Students apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world settings, developing practical skills and a deeper understanding of their chosen field. Supervisors play an active role by offering guidance, mentorship, and ongoing feedback to support the student's learning experience. At the conclusion of the internship, employers typically provide an evaluation to assess the student's performance and growth.
For additional information about Internships, please visit the Internship Program Best Practices page on our website. Here you will find Tips for Writing a Great Student Internship Posting, Internship Project Ideas, Virtual Internship Best Practices, and more.

| Join Us for the 17th Annual March for the Food Bank! Every November, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts teams up with Monte Belmonte of NEPM to lead a powerful march against hunger—covering 43 miles from Springfield to Greenfield.
