I am a landscape painter with a background in Landscape Architecture. I work both en plein air and from my photographs, painting in New England landscapes with which I have great familiarity. My subject matter ranges from mountains and streams to barns, abandoned farm machinery and cars, which are prevalent features in many of the landscapes that I paint. I am interesting in capturing the character or spirit of specific places, and in exploring how the qualities of those places affect me as an artist working in them. The paintings that result have evolved from this exploration and engagement.

Gallery A3's February exhibition is a one-person show of paintings, encaustics, drawings and constructions by artist Jozan Treston.  The show runs from February 5 to February 25.

Gallery A3 marks its tenth anniversary in 2012.  The celebration began with an all-member retrospective in January and continues with Treston's one-person show.

Treston is the gallery's founder.  The impetus to form a cooperative gallery came in September 2001, just after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.  Treston felt a need to work with other artists to create a healing response.  He felt that art is essential to the life and health of both the artist and the community and joined with others to form the Amherst Art Alliance, the artists' group at the heart of Gallery A3.

Aside from his role at the gallery, Treston, who is turning 80 this year, is an accomplished painter with more than 50 years of experience. His abstract paintings conjure images of the ocean, the earth seen from space, distressed moons, or lush rainforests.  Treston, however, doesn't imitate life with his art -- he allows the image to surface from the canvas and leaves the interpretation to the viewer.

Treston's richly textured paintings reflect the depth of his life experience:  years of living near the Chesapeake Bay, his service as a young Navy weatherman during the Korean War, two years in a Buddhist monastery, and two decades in the Pioneer Valley.  The selected works in this one-person show are just a glimpse of the long experience of a prolific artist.

CROSSING BOUNDARIES: A Collaborative exhibition of works by Ani Rivera and Anna Rotty

This collaborative exhibition of photographic works by artist and gallery owner Ani Rivera, and gallery director Anna Rotty, intends to address techniques and photographic process through intergenerational perspectives.  The show represents a variety of photographic based work, connecting analog and digital processes along with mixed media. This exhibition hopes to exemplify today's expanding definition of the photographic image.

An interactive performance piece will be held during the reception from 5-8. As part of the Freedom Trails Gallery policy, a percentage of sold works will go toward the gallery's collaborating non-profit partner organizations within our community.

February 1-28, 2012

Reception February 2, 5-8 pm.

  rene theberge

From February 1st through the 28th, René Théberge will be exhibiting recent photographs at Hope & Feathers Framing, 319 Main St. Amherst,MA.

Théberge will exhibit a collection of photographs that combine his interest in macro botanical photography in addition to his more recent focus on the larger natural world.

For over a decade and a half Théberge has been using macro photography to explore flowers, particularly the inner details, as he says of these photographs the point is "to share with people the beauty in even the smallest details of nature and to inspire others to look more
closely at the world around us".

Over the last few years Théberge has switched gears to include landscape photography using both film and digital photography to explore the rhythms and patterns of the natural world.

There will be an artist's reception on Saturday February 11th from 4 - 7 pm.

Stephen Hamilton served as director of the Amherst Boys and girls club from 1945-1982. Hamilton, who lived in Amherst with wife Genevieve Hamilton, was a founder of Leverett Crafts and Arts and taught art at the Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield. Genevieve Hamilton died in February 1993, just months before Hamilton's own death in November of that year. They had no children.

Hamilton also painted murals for the Massachusetts Building at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield. His work was exhibited locally and at the Commerford Gallery and Columbia University, both in New York City; Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada; Watercolor U.S.A. in Springfield, Mo.; and the Academic Artists Association in Springfield. His works were also shown at The Alpine Galleries in London in 1947. Queen Mary attended the exhibit opening.
